Bookmaking workshop
Gali Weiss
This workshop will present a number of possibilities for artist book-making as a basis to develop further individually. Participants will explore the artist book materially and conceptually as a narrative form and as a space that offers an intimate and immersive viewing experience.
The workshop will provide skills for producing a hard-cover concertina book, and for developing other books from variations of the concertina fold. There will also be opportunities for producing sewn Japanese-style books.
Participants can choose to concentrate on the construction of books with blank pages, or to create books from prepared prints or other works-on-paper images. Those who choose to bring images, please take into account that for the purpose of this workshop, the books will be small.
For a concertina book, prepared images should be no more than 15 cm height, though the total width of the rectangle is up to you. Each panel or ‘page’, once folded, will be 10cm wide. I will show you how to attach paper to make a wider concertina with more panels.
Optional materials:
1. Fabric and decorative papers of your choice for endpapers and covers.
2. Small boxes or containers for alternative ‘covers’/containers.

One colour and one technique per plate (thick prepared cardboard plates)
Artists would work on 3 or more plates at once. There would be an emphasis on the mark making process…. allowing these processes to take the work on a journey.
Come along with ideas and images but nothing too laborious and detailed; keep it simple, it is only a one day workshop.
Plate 1
Intaglio, line etching the plate using tools of various kinds, eg. cutting knives, knitting needles, dry point tools, tailors marker, anything interesting that can be pressed onto the plate.
Plate 2
Collograph, building texture on the plate, adhering things such as paper, doilies, leaves, feathers, string thinks with texture…many things can be gathered around the studio applying different widths of masking tape and directly drawing on the plate, using pva glue.
You may bring a few things from home for this plate keeping in mind they should not be too thick or they may tear the paper or damage the press.
Plate 3
Carborundum, applied to the plate. This technique creates lovely soft darks not unlike etching and mezzotint.
Plate 4 – If time allows, This plate would be left unmarked as a base plate for Stencil printing, these can be cut or torn from any paper, and used on an inked plate then removed and placed on a fresh piece of paper as the beginning of another print.
